There aren’t too many toys that pass the test of time, and teddy bears are one of those toys. Their universal popularity has continued uninterrupted for generations, and I imagine it will for many more. However, teddy bears haven’t always been one of our most important toys. They were created in the twentieth century, after a somewhat shocking turn of events.
Teddy bears received their name from American President Theodore Roosevelt, since “Teddy” is the short form of the name “Theodore”. In 1902, President Roosevelt attended a hunting trip with the governor of Mississippi along with a number of others. While on the hunting trip, they held a bear-shooting competition, and Roosevelt was in the possition to lose, having not shot a bear yet even after most others had. Some of Roosevelt’s assistants, in an attempt to help him win the competition, themselves captured and restrained a black bear and called for Roosevelt to come and shoot the bear. The President felt that this violated the spirit of the game, and decided not to shoot the bear. But during the capture of the bear it had been clubbed over the head and badly hurt, so Roosevelt ordered that the bear be put out of its misery.
This story of course made the papers, and was turned into satirical cartoon in the Washington Post. One person who saw the media coverage was a toy creator named Morris Michtom, who was inspired to create a new toy based on the bear in the incident. Capitalizing on the news trend of the moment, he placed one of the cute stuffed bears in his shop window with a sign labelled “Teddy’s Bear”. The bears became an immediate hit, causing Michtom to make his business larger by starting the Ideal Novelty & Toy Co.. Around 1906, many copycat companies had begun producing similar items, and they became hugely popular and a cultural phenomena.
In today’s world teddy bears continue to be the most universally loved of all children’s toys, cherished by both kids and grownups alike all over the Earth. It probably seems bizarre that such a groteque incident sparked the beginning of such a massive craze for cute stuffed children’s toys, but maybe the happy feelings that teddy bears have brought to people everywhere have made something good out of that tragic event.

Getting Around By Cycling
Almost all city dwellers like me have various modes of transportation to get them around town. A lot of them have their own vehicle, such as a car or truck, motorbike, or scooter. Public transport such as the subway or bus are also used by many people. These are all decent ways of getting around, but cycling offers a lot of positive benefits that the others don’t, so I think that cycling is the best.
One benefit of cycling is that you can get exercise. Exercising several times a week is essential for good long term health, but most people make excuses and ways to avoid exercising. Many people will buy a gym membership and stop going. Others decide to do a sport but they cancel frequently or don’t show up. Lots of people jog but end up taking a day off. Then the next day they take another day off. Then the next day they take a third day off. The issue is that they are planning to exercise, but they have failed to make exercise part of their routine. Commuting to work by bicycle is the perfect way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Because there is no way you can back out of your routine. Even if you’re exhausted after working hard all day, you can’t back out of your exercise because you have to ride home. You can’t escape the exercise you have committed to.
Another reason to cycle around town is that it’s affordable. Paying for gas isn’t necessary, and that is a great benefit in today’s world In most cases you don’t have to shell out for parking either This depends on the city, but in many cities you can just lock up your bike on the street or a bike rack for free. The key to affordability is to avoid having your bike stolen, so I recommend you invest in a good bike lock.
An additional benefit of cycling is that it is flexible so you are free to do what you want. If you decide to ride along the beach instead of the street, hey you can do it. If you want to take a shortcut through a park or narrow lane, you can. You can take your bicycle with you on the sidewalk. With a car those things are impossible, as they are with public transport. Sometimes that variety and flexibility of taking whatever route you want can take some of the stress out of your daily commute.
I myself do have an automobile because I like to travel outside of the city sometimes. But when getting around the city, my bike is so much more convenient and enjoyable than all of the other transportation methods. So if you do not own a bicycle yet, then I highly recommend you get one and start to get some enjoyment out of your travelling time.

The Ongoing Mickey Mouse Saga
Mickey Mouse is now some eighty years old and outwardly the ravages of time have not left a mark on him. Two makeovers have left him a little circular and to many a little misshapen.
His main film work seems to have dried up of late and he hasn’t had the supply a movie in over three years. He suffered the ignominy of having his last one go directly to video but he has managed to put a brave face on things and indeed that face remains one of the most iconic images in the world today even beating Santa to that particular record. His employers Disney threw a massive a great party for the Mickey’s 75th birthday one or two years back so his has decided hold back on any further large extravaganzas for the present.
Rather unusually Mickey’s story started with a rabbit - Oswald the fortunate Rabbit to be specific. Back in the mists of time Disney bros Studio was just part Universal Pictures’ animation. Walt Disney made Oswald in 1927 his round, white face, gigantic button nose and floppy black ears made him an instant hit and Universal approved a chain of shorts. Walt Disney met the Universal operatives in 1928 with a view to arranging a new contract. Oswald was still riding high in the charts and Disney assumed that a deal on his terms would be cut and dried. The studio offered to keep Disney on but only if he took a salary cut which he of course refused.
He and Ub Iwerks the one animator who stayed loyal to Disney, started on a session of blue-skying sessions burning the midnight oil to come up with a replacement for Oswald. Oswald’s ears were shortened, some extra padding around the middle, and low and behold the rabbit tuned into a mouse originally as we all new named Mortimer. This name didn’t last and he came to be known as Mickey Mouse.
The first 2 Mickey shorts were not successful but then came Steamboat Willy a cutting edge animation - the first to feature synchronized music and sound effects to hit the big-screen. Mickey Mouse became a national icon by the end of the year and it was then that Walt Disney propelled the mouse to true star standing by starting up a line of Mickey products and just after the Mickey Mouse Club was formed.
Mickey also appeared in colour for the first time that year.
by the point that 1937 came around Disney Studios was manufacturing Mickey Mouse shorts at the rate of one a month. Mickey went on to reflect the world in all it’s diverse guises, becoming at diverse stages a football hero, a hunter, a tailor, and even a symphony conductor. By this time his life companion Minnie had arrived on the scene and she always was being caught by dastardly villains always later being rescued by Mickey of course, the epitome of the all Yankee hero.
In the 1950s Mickey had his own theme park and newspaper comic strip, and he had branched out on to the new emerging medium TV. Sadly for Mickey Mouse, block buster Disney feature films like Bambi and Sleeping Beauty began to take the accolades and poor old Mickey began to fade away.
Yet despite all this Mickey’s ears are still one of the most noted cultural icons of the 20th and 21st centuries. President while the sale of Mickey Mouse merchandise have fell from their record high in 1997 they continue to make up a stupefying 40% of the company’s consumable revenue.

Tehran is the massive capital city of Iran, found at the foot of the Alborz mountain range. Because of its natural environment Tehran is graced with a spectacular wide ranging view.
So what Tehran places should be the must-sees on a traveler’s itinerary? The truth is that Iran’s most impressive attractions lie outside Tehran in cities like Esfahan, Shiraz, and Yazd. Tehran is more of a city to experience than to “see”. But there are some exciting highlights.
For those that quickly tire of old statues, the grandiose shrine of Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. It remains under assembly, but the entire complex will comprise an area of 5000 acres when completed. The main tomb is a massive gold dome surrounded by 4 minarets.

There are a lot of parks in Tehran, especially on the north-facing side of the town which is the more upper-class area.
If you will be visiting in winter season, between Nov and March, the Alborz mountain range will be covered in snow. Even Tehran town itself often receives significant snowfalls. Most people think of blistering hot sand dunes when they think of the Middle East, but you will not find that in Tehran ( well, you can find the blistering heat part in the summer months ). But instead of sand dunes there are ski slopes. Three major skiing locations include Shemshak, Dizin, and Darbandsar. They are roughly 2 hours by car or bus from the city. Except for the skiing itself, you’ll have an opportunity to escape the polluted air of the capital.
Tehran is an inviting city that’s definitely worth one or two days of your time when you come to Iran. Come and experience Tehran as a tourist destination.

Israeli Arabs’ Oath of Loyalty?

Israel’s Israel Beitenu party, which is the second largest party in the government after the Likud, ran on a platform of repealing Israeli citizenship from anyone that doesn’t make a pledge of loyalty to the State of Israel. In May of this year the Israeli Cabinet voted to reject that suggestion.
The Likud party never supported it, in fact none of the practical parties supported it. Israel Beitenu ran on a populist platform meant to stir up the population, but any party that’s use to being in power knows how dangerous of a step this measure would be.
If the offer were made into law it positively would have sparked exceptional unrest and backlash from Israel’s Arab voters, who are Palestinians who remained in Israel after the war of 1948. While they are overwhelmingly law-abiding and cooperative with Israelis, their loyalty is to their Palestinian roots and Palestinian brethren living under occupation. Any attempt tp disconnect them from their natural faithfulness would have sparked concern.
as well as making conflict and violence, the proposal would’ve been completely at percentages with Israel’s claims of being a democracy. No democracy that I know of legally requries its voters to promise their loyalty. As much as it contradicts Israel’s definition as a Jewish state and its laws that give preference to Jews, Netanyahu often pays lip service to democracy and I think he really believes in it ( though it takes a back seat to Jewish nationalism ), so he knew the threat this offer would pose to Israel’s standing as a free country.
Hassidic Jews may accept Israel and live in Israel, but they are not Zionists and their faithfulness is to God alone. If an oath of loyalty were required of Israeli Arabs, many Israelis would also demand such an oath from Hassidic Jews. The Israeli presidency wants to get round this situation at any cost.
So the offer never truly had an opportunity of being accept by the cupboard. But nonetheless, the straightforward fact that a party making such a suggestion received an enormous number of votes is unsettling for Israeli Arabs and liberal Israeli Jews.

What Are Insects Like?

To many of us insects are nothing but creepy crawlies, ugly little nasties, and annoying pests. However, insects are creatures that have an important place in our world, with literally millions of spieces of insects in existence. They are a subset of arthropods, a category of animal that has a body split up into distinct segments, as well as an exoskeleton.
Insects can be told apart from other similar-looking creatures by looking at a few specific characteristics that are easily to judge. One such distinguishable characteristic is that insects have bodies divided into three segments. The head is pretty much what you what expect, while the thorax is like a torso that connects to the head. And the abdomen connects to the thorax, and looks like the backside of the creature.
All of the six legs are connected to the thorax, and come in pairs. If you spot a small creature with legs attached to the abdomen, then it is not an insect. Another characteristic is the presence of antennae attached to the insect’s head. I should point out that while most insects do indeed have antennae, there are a few species that don’t. There are a few spieces of insects that can not fly, but they will have wings at some time during their life cycle.
The trouble comes at stages of the insect’s life cycle when it may not display all of those features. So it is important to look at both an adult and a developing specimen.
Let’s take a look at a couple of creatures that are commonly confused with insects. As you may know, spiders are not insects but rather arachnids, which we can see by counting their legs. Spiders possess eight limbs, so instantly we know that they are indeed not insects. Slugs or snails are not insects either, which we can confirm by counting their legs - wait, they don’t have any legs! The last example is the centipede. Centipedes are not insects but rather chilopa. And centipedes can have many body segments.
